Maidenhead
The Historical town of Maidenhead Berkshire, it lies on the west bank of the River Thames and is 25.7 miles west of Charing Cross London. The name Maidenhead’s refers to the riverside area where the “New wharf” or “Maiden Hythe” was built, perhaps as early as Saxon times.Maidenhead has many strong historical links to both the Danes and the Romans and in the 18th century Maidenhead was one of the busiest coaching stops in the country.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel built Maidenhead Railway Bridge which at the time had the widest and flattest brick arches of any bridge in the world – making it a true engineering master piece. After he built the railway in 1838 the heads of the then great western railway insisted that he leave the wooden framework used for it’s construction in place, as they feared that the bridge would collapse. the wood washed away in floods shortly after, today the Maidenhead bridge still stands and carries railway traffic. Another claim to fame for Maidenhead is town’s football team, Maidenhead United, play at York Road, which is the oldest football ground in the world continuously used by the same team.
Maidenhead is part of the Royal borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and has an urban population of 80,000 people. Maidenhead has some famous residents both past and present, they include Sir Michael Parkinson, Nick Hornby, Peter Jones, Richard Dimbleby and Diana Dors.
